MTV Hit Show Total Request Live (TRL) Says Goodbye In November

Total Request Live has been canceled after ten years, MTV confirmed on Monday. "We want to close this era of TRL in a big celebratory way, and 10 is a great number," Dave Sirulnick, executive producer of TRL told the Associated Press. "This feels like the right time and let's celebrate it and let's reward it." He added "Let's let it have a little bit of a rest for a minute. Been working hard for 10 years!"

The music video show will wrap in a two-hour special on a Saturday in November.
TRL first debuted in September 1998. The show peaked in 1999 with 757,000 viewers tuning in daily, according to Nielsen Media Research, the AP reported.

For the finale, expect to see TRL favorites including former VJ Carson Daly. "Folks who helped make TRL what is, whether that's Justin, and his guys in N' Sync, the Backstreet Boys, Britney, Eminem - I think we would love to see all of them here," Sirulnick told the AP.

"I'm going to miss TRL," rapper Eminem said in a statement. "Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honor vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait ... The VMAs!"

90210 Gets Juicy This Week With A Big Reveal

The father of Kelly Taylor’s 4-year-old son Sammy will finally be revealed on Tuesday’s episode of 90210, PEOPLE has learned. And Brenda Walsh will be the one spilling the beans! Brenda (Shannen Doherty) and Kelly (Jennie Garth) will be having a serious conversation about Sammy’s dad when Brenda reveals his name. In another twist, the show’s executive producer Gabe Sachs told PEOPLE that there’s a “possibility” the baby’s father could appear on a future episode. Who it could be?

So far, Kelly has mentioned she knew him in high school and they have history together. The couple went their separate ways, but hooked up four years ago. Since then, he’s been out of the picture. In the series premiere, Kelly took a 3 a.m. phone call from Brandon who is now living in Belize. Their late-night talk was interrupted when Sammy walked in. Perhaps another clue?

Sachs and fellow executive producer Jeff Judah already know who they wanted to be the father, and also discussed it with Jennie. He said Shannen and Jennie were great about the news and had a lot of fun. “The two of them love being in on secrets,” he said. Fans will be in on the secret when it’s revealed Sept. 16, 8 p.m. ET on the CW.

American Idol Is Getting A Fourth Judge For The New Season

Paula, Randy and Simon are getting some company. Grammy-nominated songwriter Kara DioGuardi is joining American Idol as a judge when the singing competition returns for its eighth season in January 2009. “We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table,” show creator Simon Fuller said in a statement released Monday. “She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters. We know she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.”

DioGaurdi is certainly qualified for the job, having written songs for artists as diverse as Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Santana, and Pink. Even Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers have released DioGuardi’s songs.

Adding a fourth judge may seem like a shakeup for TV’s biggest show but, according to executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz, producers always intended to have a fourth judge on the panel. “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers,” Frot-Coutaz said.

And at least one executive at FOX, Mike Darnell, the network’s president of alternative programming, believes that original female judge Paula Abdul deserves some companionship. “For the past seven seasons, Paula has had to endure the experience of being the only woman at the judges’ table,” Darnell said in a statement. “With Kara by her side, Paula finally has some back-up and now there is going to be a lot more ‘girl power’ on the show.”

CSI William Petersen's Replacement Announced

No need for fingerprints. A very familiar face has signed on to star in the hit CSI: Crime Scene Investigation this season. The Matrix's Laurence Fishburne will replace William Peterson, who's leaving the series after eight years behind the microscope, the Associated Press reports.

Fishburne – who earned an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It – said he was "elated and delighted" by the news. The actor will reportedly portray a former pathologist turned college lecturer. He meets up with members of the CSI team during a homicide investigation – and ends up joining them.

But, of course, he has a secret: The character's genetic profile has been identified in serial killers. "This gentleman knows this about himself and is ... in this journey to discover who his true character will ultimately become," CBS programming chief Nina Tassler told the AP.

Peterson – who plays team leader Gil Grissom – will depart the series partway through the upcoming season. But he will continue as an executive producer for the long-running series – and he has not ruled out occasional guest appearances.

Estelle Getty Of The Golden Girls Fame Dies At The Age Of 84

Estelle Getty, who won an Emmy and a Golden Globe as the tart-tongued Sophia Petrillo – mother of Beatrice Arthur's character – on TV's The Golden Girls, has died. She was 84.

Estelle's longtime manager, Alan Siegel, told PEOPLE on Tuesday: "As of 5:35 this morning, surrounded by her family in her Hollywood Hills home, Estelle Getty passed away peacefully in her sleep of natural causes. Her family and close friends thank everyone for being so loving and supportive of Estelle in her last few years." For many years, Getty had suffered with Lewy's Body Dementia, which has been described as a type of Alzheimer's disease.

Also starring with Betty White and Rue McClanahan on the NBC sitcom, Estelle's Sophia resulted in her receiving seven Emmy nominations, and a win in 1988. Equally winning were her well-delivered insults on the show. A typical Petrillo put-down: "I think there's a connection between your brain and wallpaper paste."

Specializing in playing "old" (Estelle, only a year older than Beatrice, was in her early 60s when she was cast as octogenarian Sophia), the future TV star was born Estelle Scher, the daughter of Polish immigrants, on New York's Lower East Side. In 1946, she took a husband, retail-glass businessman Arthur Gettleman, whose name she would later adapt as a stage professional. But first, she raised the Gettleman's two sons, Carl and Barry.

Eventually there were off-off Broadway roles, then Harvey Fierstein cast her as his overbearing mother in Torch Song Trilogy, which opened on Broadway in 1982. The spotlight from that show resulted in her landing the role of Sophia. Arthur Gettleman died in 2004. Her sons survive her.

"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her Carl Gettleman told the Associated Press Tuesday. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived." Funeral services will be private, said Siegel.

Bea Arthur has released a statement to Usmagzine.com saying, "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her.”

Saddened by the news, Betty White (who played the naïve Rose) told Us, "The only comfort at this moment is that although Estelle has moved on, Sophia will always be with us."

Debra Messing Too Busy Filming New Series To Celebrate Her 40th Birthday

Former Will & Grace star Debra Messing will turn 40 on August 15 — but this is one milestone she won't be celebrating. Not because she fears the dreaded 4-0, but because she’ll be too busy working. “It’s hard to believe,” Debra laughed about her lack of a birthday bash to reporters at Sunday night’s NBC party. “I have no plans, not yet. I will be working, shooting on my birthday unless the executive producers make it so I can have the day off.”

But even if she does have to work, Debra says she hopes her parents will come in to celebrate her birthday either the day before or after and “we’re going to be having a really nice dinner.” The curly-haired beauty is currently wrapped up with shooting the new USA network TV series of The Starter Wife, based on her hit mini-series from last year.

And on the topic of starter wives, Debra, who is married to Damages producer Daniel Zelman, says she's been lucky to not really have first-hand experience in that area. “Unfortunately, in our culture, people are impatient and aren’t willing to work through difficult times,” Debra reflected. “My parents are still together—45 years—so my model has been that love lasts.”

Her folks have taught her “that you have to work every single day and if you just assume that everything is as wonderful as it was the year before, it’s inevitable you’re going to run into problems. Sharing your life and creating family with someone is the most difficult and most rewarding thing you can do and it takes work every day. No one has perfected marriage.”

I am looking so forward to this series. I really enjoyed the mini-series last summer and I hope that it will be just as entertaining. If you want to check out information on the show the USA Network has a page dedicated to the mini-series.

The Kardashians Get Another Season And Brenda Walsh Back In 90210

E! Entertainment Television has picked up Keeping Up With the Kardashians for a third season. The reality series follows the lives of Los Angeles socialite Kim Kardashian and her siblings along with mom Kris and stepfather Bruce Jenner. Khloe K’s trip to the slammer will probably be part of the new season. E! has ordered 10 episodes for Season 3, which will debut in the first quarter. Season 2 of Keeping Up With the Kardashians averaged 1.6 million total viewers per episode, a 36% improvement over Season 1.

“Shannen Doherty will be returning to 90210,” Gabe Sachs, executive producer of the CW’s new spin-off, said during the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “Shannen is looking forward to returning to 90210,” Shannen’s rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.

Shannen, who played the twin sister to Jason Priestley’s character Brandon Walsh for four seasons of the original Beverly Hills, 90210, will return as Brenda Walsh when the new show premieres Sept. 2. Now, Brenda will be a visiting drama teacher who directs a musical at West Beverly High School.

Jennie Garth was the first original 90210 cast member to reprise her role as Kelly Taylor, who will be a counselor who at West Beverly. Earlier this month, Tori Spelling, who played Donna Martin in the original, was also announced as a returning cast member but said she would be unable to appear in the pilot of the spin-off after giving birth to her daughter in June. “I’m looking forward to returning to 90210 in a later episode,” Tori told PEOPLE earlier this month. According to Sachs, original cast members won’t just have cameos. “They will be in multiple episodes,” he said at the TCA event.

William Petersen Is Leaving CSI This Season

William Petersen is leaving CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and many fans of his Gil Grissom will not be happy. Petersen has agreed to return for occasional guest appearances and will remain a "CSI" executive producer but his run as an original cast member will end this coming season, executive producers Carol Mendelsohn and Naren Shankar said Tuesday. The air date for his final episode, the season's 10th, has yet to be determined but probably will be at the beginning of 2009, the producers said. The series debuted in fall 2000.

A number of familiar characters will return in the episodes building up to Grissom's departure, among them his former colleague and flame Sara Sidle, played by Jorja Fox; the Miniature Killer and sexy Lady Heather. "Who better to turn to when you're a scientist in crisis," Mendelsohn said jokingly of Heather (Melinda Clarke).
The decision to leave was Petersen's, the producers said, declining further comment. A call to Petersen's publicist was not returned Tuesday. The actor had taken a break during the 2006-07 season to perform in a play, with Liev Schreiber stepping in as a visiting investigator.

The long-running show remains key for CBS: CSI finished last season as the network's top-rated series, ranking No. 9 among all shows with an average weekly audience of 17 million. Spinoffs CSI: Miami and CSI: New York ranked 16th and 28th, respectively.

The producers were mum about specific plot points but said that Grissom will be reappraising his life after years of high-tech forensics investigations with the Las Vegas Police Department and after facing personal turmoil. "We're talking about a man who has suffered a great deal of loss recently... A man thinking about the next phase of his life," Shankar said. Shankar and Mendelsohn vowed that cast changes won't change CSI. "What makes shows go off the rails is they forget who they are. We're a crime-mystery-forensics drama" with a focus on exceptional cases, Shankar said.

Remember it was just this season that cast regular Jorja Fox left after playing the character of Sara Sidle since the show aired and Gary Dourdan’s run as Warrick Brown…. well that ended in the season finale. So that means three of the original cast members will be gone. This will really change the show. Let’s hope only for the better.
